Dyson Farming has again turned to the specialist expertise of large-scale commercial glasshouse specialists CambridgeHOK to design and build a third phase of its strawberry growing site in Lincolnshire.
CambridgeHOK built Dyson Farming’s first 14-acre strawberry growing glasshouse on the Carrington site in 2020, and completed phase two, providing an additional 11 acres, in 2024.
Already home to 1,225,000 plants producing over 1,250 tonnes of high-quality British strawberries a year, the glasshouse facility is now to be extended by a further 17 acres.
In addition, more than 14 acres of high-tech polytunnels are also to be built at the Carrington site to grow strawberries between July and October.
The project will also include an extension to the existing packhouse on site, with an additional cold store, powered by onsite renewables, using blast chilling systems which will reduce the temperature of strawberries from 24C to 4C within 30 minutes of being picked.
This will help to protect the nutritional value, quality and shelf-life of the fruit, which is taken from site to supermarkets within 24 to 48 hours.
Contract reflects ‘confidence and trust’
Tim Haworth, Horticultural Director at CambridgeHOK, has overseen on site work on every phase so far and says the company is thrilled to have been chosen once again.
“We always say at CambridgeHOK that a project can be considered a success if a customer comes back for project two, and then project three, and for that to happen with a customer of the standing of Dyson Farming is obviously very satisfying, and a great reflection on our business,” he said.
“It shows they trust our knowledge and expertise, but also our reliability to deliver their vision.”
Patrick Harte, joint managing director of CambridgeHOK, says the two businesses have a ‘great understanding’ having worked together for many years.
“We’re thrilled to have been selected once again by Dyson Farming. The work we have done for them, and continue to do, showcases all we can do as a business, as all the disciplines in our business are involved,” he said.
“There is a true transparency in the nature of our relationship and we have a great understanding of how we each work.
“They are a hugely successful organisation who put their trust and faith in us back when we built the very first phase in 2020.”
