Design, fabrication and installation of bespoke curved lattice steel roof trusts at UK Holiday Park
Client: Access North Structures (ANS) – redevelopment of Haggerston Castle Holiday Park Atrium
Project overview:
Haggerston Castle Holiday Park’s focal atrium leisure facility was in need of a major restoration due to the gable end timber rafters becoming severely rotten – to the point that their condition was compromising the entire structure. CambridgeHOK were appointed to design and fabricate a multi-radii lattice truss, which was to be bolted on both gable ends.
As the current PVC roofing was damaged in places and proving difficult to clean and maintain, the holiday park had decided to replace it with an Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) and aluminium material.
The solution:
The job posed various challenges to produce the replacement steel, curved trusses at the exact sizing required. Further complications were encountered as one of the gable end timber glulams was bolted to the listed castle tower building. The job required that new lattice trusses be at the same level at the bottom of the existing rafters, and bolted to the existing horizontal beams.
They had to be raised slightly on top to accommodate the new roofing material and aluminium glazing bars.
The ETFE and aluminium also needed to be kept at the same level and bolted with clamp brackets and multi-radii parallel flange channels. To achieve a perfect solution we used a 3D scan model to define the accurate size and depth of the existing glulam rafters. This enabled our specialists to observe and visualise the 3D scan cloud file to understand the extent of timber glulam and the levels of the horizontal beams, helping to design and model the trusses and clamp brackets to ensure a perfect fit.
The benefits for our clients:
This key facility at Haggerston Castle Holiday Park now benefits from much more natural light and a much more welcoming and pleasant environment for guests and visitors. The ETFE membrane lets in around 95% of light and is approximately 1% the weight of glass, offering long-life and excellent thermal efficiency.
The project would not have been possible without the expertise of CambridgeHOK’s specialist engineering team and the ability to work to meet challenging design, fabrication and installation specifications, completing the work including manufacture and installation in eight weeks.
