Tees Valley

The work undertaken in the Tees Valley also highlighted our company’s ability to build partnerships, thereby enabling the successful delivery of a highly efficient and dynamic energy system, fit for the 21st Century.

As we are all aware, glasshouses are structures that are essential in feeding our nation, enabling fruit and veg to be grown all year round — it is therefore vital that a consistent and cost-effective heat source is delivered.

Prior to our project, the Tees Valley glasshouse had taken its heat and CO2 from nearby factories a system that was increasingly unreliable and resulting in lost revenue, disenfranchised supply chain customers and reduced profitability.

Already known to this client, we had successfully executed past projects for them, we were entrusted with the project’s complete design and construction.

Using our highly-skilled and experienced in house engineers, we progressed in the following way:

  • Two 9.3mW hot water boilers were installed to assist the grower through the winter period.
  • Two new 3.3MWe Jenbacher CHP engines were installed, with operating efficiency optimised by a 5.6 million litre thermal storage tank.
  • The site wide infrastructure was transformed with 5kms of HV cabling laid, CO2 pipework, district heating pipework and a portal frame extension.
  • We ensured all the above was carried out without interrupting the 24/7 growing process.

The result was a new energy centre, offering a decentralised solution providing heat and CO2 to the glasshouse. Added to that, the system supplies the equivalent of 4,000 local homes with electricity and has been doing so since October 2016.

Tees Valley is a fine example of teamwork with us, the sub-contractors and client working together to stay on course and within budget. Once again, we delivered a highly successful project of which we are extremely proud.
